One of the most important relationships you'll have this year is the one you cultivate with your roommate or apartment-mates. Numerous books have been written on "successful relationships." Here are four crucial ingredients to a successful roommate or apartment-mate relationship we encourage residents to keep in mind:
- Expectations: Each person may have different interpretations of what sharing space means.
- Communication: Open lines of communication; talk to each other about needs and concerns.
- Flexibility: Remain open to doing things differently than what you are used to.
- Respect: Respect each other's differences, needs and priorities.
If you experience conflicts within your room or your apartment that you cannot resolve together, please contact your resident assistant. They are trained to help.
Do You Live in a Room Without a Roommate(s)?
If a vacancy occurs in your room or your apartment, the remaining occupant(s) will be expected to share the room with a new roommate. This means you should be prepared for a roommate at all times by using only your portion of the room. Depending upon the time of year that the vacancy occurs, you may be consolidated with another person who also does not have a roommate.
If you will be receiving a new roommate, the staff will make every attempt to notify you of this new arrival. Residents who fail to have their room prepared for a new roommate at the time of his/her arrival may be assessed an administrative charge of $50 and may be required to participate in an Administrative Review (for information on Administrative Reviews see the section on "Your Conduct System").
Resident Living Agreements
While living within the residential living community at SF State, you and your roommates will be required to complete a Resident Living Agreement (RLA). The RLA will be facilitated by the Residential Life staff during the first few weeks of the semester.
Requests related to roommate conflicts will be handled by the office of Residential Life. Requests due to financial circumstances will be handled by the Housing Business Office. Requests will not be processed during the first two weeks of the semester. Roommate expectations and responsibilities are available in the Community Living Standards.
Should you and your roommate(s) encounter difficulties, we encourage you to contact your resident assistant or community coordinator. We strongly encourage residents to go through the mediation process with the resident assistant to begin to create an environment that fosters open dialogue in an effort to resolve room/apartment concerns. We believe sharing space and learning to respectfully co-exist despite, our differences, are the hallmarks of a person's development into adulthood.
Residents may be required to participate in mediation with their resident assistant or other Residential Life staff member before a physical move will be considered for approval. During mediation, all residents involved in the situation will be asked to discuss their concerns and attempt to find a mutually agreeable resolution with assistance from the staff member present.
The Room Change Request Form is available online through your Housing Portal.
After logging into the housing application, select the Room Change Request link at the top of the page.
- On the Booking Selector page, select your room assignment and then press Save & Continue.
- On the Welcome page press Save & Continue, no information is needed on this page.
- On the Room Change Request page students will select their desired community and room type.
- Residents will also be prompted to provide a detailed reason for the room change request.
- To complete the Room Change Request, students will need to enter their SF State ID number and press Save & Continue.
